Category: Image organizersRecently, efforts have been made to eliminate lead or cadmium from lead-acid storage batteries. These efforts have been made primarily for use in lead-acid storage batteries for electric vehicles, but also have applicability to other storage batteries. The replacement materials, however, have been unsuitable for a number of reasons.
Many of the newer compounds which have been suggested for use in place of lead have the disadvantage of being relatively expensive. For example, lithium is relatively expensive, and at least equal or greater difficulty is encountered in obtaining a suitable alloying agent.
One such compound which has been suggested is lithium-iron phosphate. This material has an advantage over the more usual lead-antimony oxide due to its higher specific gravity and its compatibility with magnesium. However, this material also has the disadvantage of requiring high temperatures (700.degree.-1000.degree. C.) to charge and discharge.
One other compound which has been suggested is lithium-iron-chromium oxide. This compound has the same specific gravity and is much less expensive than the lead-antimony oxide, but, in order to achieve high performance at room temperature, it would be necessary to use a high grade of an alloying agent.
